Philanthropy in Sacramento Day

Philanthropy California’s annual Philanthropy in Sacramento Day is a special event bringing together our state’s elected officials with leaders of our sector. The day is our opportunity to share the work of philanthropy so that our state’s policymakers can take the best practices developed from your grantmaking and scale it up to improve the lives of millions of Californians. This year, we will also place a special focus on 2020 Census preparation efforts. Our 1.5 days in Sacramento will include opportunities to:

• Educate legislators and the administration about philanthropy’s role in civil society, the importance of 2020 Census, and best practices on issues that you fund;
• Develop and cultivate relationships with fellow policy-oriented peers and policymakers; and,
• Encourage legislators to view foundations as thought partners. 

We are also thrilled to offer a half-day briefing and welcome reception for all participants on Monday, May 21, 2018. The briefing will cover emerging issues affecting philanthropy and communities across California and will provide an opportunity for interactive discussions with leading policy experts. Finally, connect fellow participants at the Welcome Reception immediately following the briefing.

California continues to face ongoing public policy challenges in addressing poverty, affordable housing, and uncertainty from actions in Washington. This session provides an overview of the current public policy landscape and highlights opportunities for philanthropy to advance policy goals, including 2020 Census. The discussion brings a cross sector of the state’s policy movers, including former Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, who leads the statewide work for the bipartisan Council for a Strong America; Vanessa Cajina, a long time legislative advocate who has worked on issues related to healthcare, immigrant families, and poverty; and, Guy Strahl, who has worked extensively on housing issues during his tenure in the Legislature.

Where are the state’s policymakers headed toward the Census? This session highlights the importance of a fair and accurate count for California and policy opportunities at the state level through an intimate conversation with legislative leaders.
