Voter Suppression on the Ballot: Fighting Voter ID in California

Voting rights are under attack across the country. From the recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act to federal voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act, national efforts to prevent marginalized communities from having a voice in the future of this country are gaining steam. In California, a Republican-backed ballot measure to require voter ID on both in-person and mail-in ballots recently qualified for the November election.

A coalition of voting rights and equity advocates has come together to lead the opposition to this ballot measure. As they ramp up operations over the next few months, they will need full resourcing to ensure that every voter understands that this measure will make it harder for every Californian to vote, and that California must not backslide in the fight for a fairer multiracial democracy.

What’s at stake? Studies show that photo ID policies suppress the vote by as much as four percentage points, with disproportionate impact on Latino voters, and that voter ID laws widen racial gaps in participation

Join the California Donor Table and our co-hosts, Philanthropy California and California Community Foundation to learn more about the Voter ID measure that will be on the November ballot, and coordinate with coalition leaders and other funders about how best to resource the opposition efforts.
