Los Angeles | Conversations with Marcus Walton, GEO’s New President and CEO

We invite you to join conversations across the state with Marcus Walton, the new President and CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO). This is a great opportunity to get to know Marcus, hear his vision for GEO, and share your reflections on how GEO can support grantmakers and move the field of philanthropy forward. The event is open to any SCG or GEO members (you do not have to be a GEO member to attend). Philanthropy California has been engaged in a formal strategic partnership with GEO since 2016 and we are excited to offer this to our members of SCG to help shape GEO’s next chapter through this conversation.

Marcus F. Walton

A non-profit industry veteran, has served as a community organizer, non-profit practitioner, grantmaker, leadership coach and collaborative change maker who has successfully harnessed the power of change to develop more effective strategies for cultivating thriving communities. The appointment of Walton signals a pivotal time for GEO, as it recognizes racial equity as one of the critical cornerstones for effective philanthropy and transformation in its multi-year strategic plan. As a certified executive coach and facilitator, Walton has a decades-long track record of leading institutional change with community-based and philanthropic organizations, including The Cleveland Foundation and Neighborhood Progress Inc. Subsequently, he went on to serve as Vice President & COO of the Association of Black Foundation Executives (ABFE), where he oversaw operations, HR, staff development and the administration of racial equity focused programming. In his most recent role as Director of Racial Equity Initiatives for Borealis Philanthropy, Walton worked in partnership with 19 philanthropy-serving organizations to move from transactional to transformative partnership models that close access gaps in marginalized communities, increase engagement and improve outcomes.

About Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO)

Grantmakers for Effective Organizations exists to help grantmakers turn their desire to improve into real progress. That’s the power of the GEO community. With more than 7,000 grantmakers across the globe, we work together to lift up the grantmaking practices that matter most to nonprofits and that truly improve philanthropy. There’s no shortage of advice out there for grantmakers working to improve. There’s also no shortage of hurdles to making change. Since 1997, GEO has provided opportunities for grantmakers to come together to share knowledge and inspire each other to act. GEO members find value in making strong connections to address mutual challenges, navigating the same journey to improve.
